who we are
maurice asso
principal & lighting designer
as a pioneer of the architectural lighting profession since the early 1990’s, asso ventured to achieve a milestone in this domain that paid off several years later to draw a line between choosing light fixtures and architectural lighting expression.
maurice invests tremendously in the new science of lighting technology and its design tools where this knowledge is transferred regularly to his team of accomplished designers. this keeps the whole pack on the front lines of design methods and makes their products a much sought commodity rather than luxury.
as a member of the Professional Lighting Design Association (PLDA) since 2008, and SLL UK in 2014, asso constantly preaches the disciplines of the lighting establishment and encourages all new comers to work under its umbrella and attain the respect and recognition of other professionals of the architectural domain. many lectures and workshops over the world seed the future knowledge for the coming lighting designers.
SERVICES
the lighting design venue was never limited to one category or another, for it knows no artistic limitations, and very few practical ones. In Hilights, we learn how to embrace the vast horizons, and how to defy the practical obstacles. although the work is not restricted to any category, it is however divided into two: project design and light art installation.
project design: upon receiving a project, the work process starts with a research phase, as one of Hilights’ most appraised signatures is the evolved, mature, and up-to-date proposals. after thorough investigation, the concept delicately comes to life, in which the team put together creativity, style, practicality and feasibility. after agreeing on the concept, Hilights’ role continues to follow with the development of the ideas and their implementation, to be finally applied and supervised on site.
the projects covered include residential areas, entertainment zones, boutique shops, commercial malls, business offices, religious spaces, and urban planning.
light art installation: for Hilights to break through the main stream of the industry and satisfy its team’s lust to evolvement and outstanding achievements, this design firm does not depend on any brand. It is flexible to choose from any product and design in an untagged technique and methodology.
when the team find themselves in front of a missing / preceded effect or installation, they then create it and develop it themselves.
Hilights specializes in creative, custom-made light art installations in lebanon and other countries in europe and the middle east.the company utilizes an unmatched expertise from leading architects, as well as interior architects and designers, to deliver a comprehensive range of lighting solutions. the team’s custom-made models first originate with an original design concept, and are then handled by specialized craftsman.
thus, Hilights manages to maintain a long-term client-focused relationship with collaborators, embracing the design’s needs so as to provide the owners with the space they aim for.

the basic task here was to create an outdoor setting capable of hosting events for up to 300 people. the complications were the harsh desert climate and the timetable - six months from design to completion. all required functions, including an industrial kitchen, open bar, bathrooms, showers and changing rooms, are embedded within two limestone walls, between a series of linear gardens. three finishing materials are used: travertine for all flooring and the swimming pool; nuala limestone for the walls of the 40m long pergola; and teak wood for the shade structure.
the challenge in this project was to create a completely dynamic atmosphere. using exterior lighting with fully hidden light sources, side by side to a customized animated color changing pool with fibre optic lighting.

BEIT TRAD
architect: dagher hanna & partners . type: landscape . location: lebanon
beit trad, once a traditional lebanese family home, now reborn into a guesthouse, opens its doors to visitors and invites them to a walk down memory lane offering such the reminiscing experience. the guesthouse is composed of three separate structures, connected together through shared terraces and alleyways with breath-taking nature embracing it from all sides. the lighting design is aimed to accentuate both the natural and architectural elements of the guesthouse, all the while staying discreetly hidden within the structure.
a narrow roadway sandwiched between layers of trees leads you to the entrance of beit trad. on both sides of the pathway, a play of intensities overwhelm the forest. canopies and trunks are accentuated by different light intensities giving the forest a certain depth. along with the shadows cast on the ground and the pathway’s general lighting, the scene looks rather like a mystical painting.
as you walk into the entrance of the guesthouse, a moon light effect appears on the floor, cast from the small branch projectors on the tall trees and glowing shrubs appear on the outline of the piazza. then, leading the way into the first building, a narrow pathway starts with an arched doorway covered with vines. a soft light embraces the arch after which, a series of shrubs and plants cast their shadow on the pathway floor. a warm antique wall light greets the guests upon entering the house and the shadows of the trees wash the stone facade.
general lighting of the exterior is mostly provided from tall trees on which branch projectors are installed while shorter, fuller trees glow with branch projectors lighting their canopies. a couple of steps lead to the pool area whose general lighting is provided from surrounding trees; the pool itself is glowing with the reflection of adjacent tree canopies.
much like the lighting of the landscape, the lighting in the interior aims to emphasise the architecture elements and make them stand out. therefore, customisation was made to already existing lighting elements so as to make them blend into the architecture smoothly and a uniform but soft general lighting is achieved with a dramatic lighting ambience.

throughout 1924-1936, a residential complex was built to dominate sodeco’s intersection. barakat building was composed of two separate asymmetrical structures, each three floors, and linked on the street corner by a common ground floor and entrance. the void between its two structures, veiled by delicately perched arches, brought forth a street view to every room in the six 500sqm apartments. its interior was as desirable as its architecture. art Nouveau claimed the hand painted ceilings; art Deco flooded the floors with colored patterns of marble tiles.
upon entering the building, you’ll notice a central space where the existing structure meets its extension. a versatile lighting layout was created here for the constantly changing exhibitions. track projectors rotating around a circular skylight’s center provide accent & ambient lighting. subtle lighting signals across the floor lead to a dominant ramp circulating vertically, linking the old structures to the new, and every floor in between.
architect youssef haidar paid tribute to the atypical void by keeping the extension disconnected. the result, a centered atrium and skylight peering into the ground floor entrance first, then basement’s theater below. with a narrow beam projector on the third floor directed towards the atrium, we enhanced a moonlight effect.

the architect and artist nadim karam wanted to create a sacred refuge for him. a place to experiment with his art, exhibit his unique pieces and that of other artists. having a vast plot of land around his traditional Lebanese house in the mountains, he decided to invert the landscape and build a monumental museum below it. the modern museum displays many paintings and sculptures throughout the space, having corten showcases integrated onto the walls of the interior, connecting it to the landscape area as well. the lighting of the space is intended to create a dramatic museum effect by accentuating each art piece with a projector light focused on it, giving it a contrast in the space. the projectors are mounted onto linear profiles that are installed in a hidden way on the hvac pipe that runs throughout the projector parallel to the wall. the area where the artist works on his pieces is skillfully lit with ambient light that has proper lighting levels. the lighting of the whole project has high specifications (lumen outputs, precision optics and cri values) - to vividly show the colors, objects and space. the main corten showcase has a hidden lighting grazing the concrete wall behind it giving a contre-jour effect to the showcased items. another layer of lighting allows certain openings in this element to have their displayed objects lit from in front from hidden mini projectors above them. the transition ramps and stairs between the interior and exterior project are lit with micro led chips placed in hidden details of the balustrade that give a soft and homogenous light.

to complete the feel of this private residence designed by Claude Missir Architect, this piece was inspired by its own entourage.
the cylindrical form of the elements came to break the rectangularity of the space and give fluidity to a rather rigid architecture, complementing the existing sculptures. the fixtures hang directly from the ceiling, free without restrictions.
the dark wood colours and warm mood suggested the use of brass in different tonalities, creating a visual harmony.
inside each cylinder, a plexi glass circular piece was introduced to diffuse the light, spreading it softly on the surface.

this standout apartment designed by joe farah, boasts a stylish interior that requires a personalized approach to its lighting; something simple yet sophisticated. hence, it was necessary to introduce two key elements into space; hierarchy and connectivity.
the visual connection and the play of contrast are not to be missed in this space, they shape the implemented lighting philosophy. by introducing discreet ambient lighting to space, which evokes comfort throughout the apartment, a smooth and consistent transition from one space to another is created.
the idea of hierarchy employs accent lighting to highlight specific architectural elements and to define their functions and importance within the general space.
also balancing between ambient and accent lighting, is a complex yet simple dimming system that is introduced in order to serve the users of the interesting living area.
as for the dining room, a unique piece designed by maurice asso. “the egg”, one of a three-series collection; floats above the dining table to serve as a cluster of light, combining both functional and decorative illumination, creating a uniquely lit and captivating visual zone.

cherrylane is the culmination of a dream; paying tribute to the village of hammana, its nature and its history. from this context came the idea of bringing people together in a space that combines a coffee shop, a restaurant and a lounge. close to lamartine’s castle, atop of a valley and overlooking a magical landscape, stands a beautiful old stone building that frames an outdoor terrace. having a facade characterized by a series of arches and an interior formed by intertwined vaults, gives the place its charm. to complement the features of this restored building, the lighting is intended to be warm, soothing and welcoming. the exterior is identified by custom made floor luminaires consisting of branched conic-shaped pole heads and repeated as wall lights to spread subtle ambient light. Uplights are framing the arches and grazing the stone walls, adding depth to the architecture and highlighting its authenticity. moving towards the interior, the vaults are softly washed by surface mounted wall lights to give the space a warm and cozy atmosphere. adding a modern touch to the ancient feel, the bar surface is lit by adjustable luminaires mounted on a black metal structure which plays the role of a task light. the vertical structure of the bar is backlit in order to make it stand out.

SPINE
SPINE
architect: gatserelia design . type: restaurant . location: lebanon
spine, the unparalleled lounge bar, sits on a rooftop amidst floating lights. a steel structure embraces the rooftop, zig-zagging & see-sowing its way from the entrance to cover the entire rooftop and translucent panels sit straight or lie down on top of the structure, all together, creating a distinctive silhouette that stands out from the entire cityscape.
the concept behind Gregory Gatserelia Design was to create a skyline of a high-rise tower city. the concept starts from a chaotic structure which carries such skyline elements & integrates hidden lights. to achieve this skyline, methacrylate panels were used along with the steel structure to create a translucent surface to illuminate, at the same time, animate said skyline. then, strips of light are flushed with the surface of the tubes, made from RGBW (12W/m, 341lm/W, CRI80, W3000K, pitch 1cm, 70000Hr) special DMX components allowing the control over every 10 cm of the strips individually. this allows for a complete animation in terms of direction, similar to pixilation. the towering panels are made to illuminate with different RGBW colors uniformly. they pop up when lit and dissolve when turned off, as they fade into the night.
these six-thousand-address lights are controlled via DMX computer that controls every pixel individually using video animation. every animation controls the different lights according to location & pattern effect. the lights are controlled individually and managed by a scene controller to determine the different scenes all through the night through automation. the light shows are also synchronized manually or automatically so as the DJ shifts from track to the next, lights shift from one scene to the other.
the general lighting is also supported by very small, well-shielded accent lights that point at every table as well as the central bar. all the lighting elements that are used in the space are made to withstand the extreme outdoor environment which is in close vicinity to the sea as the lounge bar overlooks the highway from one side and the entire waterfront area from the other. As for the glare control, spotlights are shielded and linear lights’ direction and positioning are well studied as not to light towards the night sky.
during the day, the LED profiles and panels blend into the scene, almost hidden. at night, however, the rooftop looks like a modern cityscape busy with lights and sounds and the music and the lights are completely in sync, making the lounge bar a visual experience on its own. as the lights shift from one scene to the other and music from one beat to the next, sound and color become one and the visitors of the lounge experience some sort of chromesthesia.

SERAY RESTAURANT
SERAY
architect: gatserelia design . type: restaurant . location: lebanon
upon entering the premises of seray - a concept by Gregory Gatserelia Design - one is ushered in with gradual warmth and a noticeable spatial harmony, inviting the visitors to engage with their surrounding. while different zones are segregated in terms of character, the uniform lighting accumulates the elements of space.
in order for the lighting effects to reflect the Lebanese dining experience, the dichotomy was key in the challenging design process, which called for customizing exclusive, unique lighting fixtures.
this project stands out for it was not treated to solely serve as a restaurant, but as a whole experience, which captivates one’s five senses from arrival to departure.

this space - a concept by Gregory Gatserelia Design - consists of two floors dividing several functions under one roof. the elevator entrance to both areas is dominated by a web-like structure made of glass and copper. both spaces are dominated by the use of untreated copper that ages with time and contact.
the ground floor, serving as the main restaurant, is allocated the concept of flying saucers in its ceiling, as to allow guests into an outer-world experience. the dim lighting is provided by led strips on the upper back of the disks that cater to the warm, cozy atmosphere desired. the disks are complemented with projectors for accent lighting on each table, permitting optimal comfort for guests.
the upper floor, also serving as a restaurant, turns into a club late at night. therefore, the untreated copper ceiling is garnished with slightly recessed led strips incorporated into the existing gaps, in an unconventional way, creating a game of light and darkness. the hidden DMX controllers installed allow several scenes and feel within the same design. moreover, pending custom-made tubes with projectors sneak down from the ceiling, providing accent lighting for tables and passageways. to balance the light in the space, candlelight like fixtures hang on the wall for a discrete and soft lighting effect.

gavi is an Italian cuisine restaurant located in the heart of downtown Beirut. the interior design of the space is quite unique in the choice of colors and circular setup. to bring forward this unique interior style, we have come up with a lighting concept that derives from the spiral structure of tagliatelle pasta, a random stacking of intertwined circles in the ceiling that compliment the circular shape of the indoor space. scattered cylinders light down from in-between the ceiling rods, to provide ambient lighting throughout the dining space. on one hand, the pergolas perching above the tables illuminate the outside terrace as we have incorporated led strips in several parts of them for discrete soft lighting. accent lighting, on the other hand, is provided by a selection of table lamps chosen by Gregory Gatserelia Design.

sultan brahim’s warm interior is generously decked with wooden walls and ceilings. an open floor plan with service areas found on its perimeters leaves a dining experience centered. overhead, wooden beams stretch out every couple of meters, framing recurrent tent-like PVC ceilings. our task at hand was to compliment the warmth of the space and provide ample task lighting.
to begin, all service bars with stone cladding
backdrops were grazed downwards with linear light. Moving in towards the center, a combination of three methods was applied – direct & indirect linear lighting, and accent lighting.
the beams that extended horizontally across the ceiling included lit grooves with hidden projectors. this allowed directional task lighting for the tables below. the outer edges of these beams provided linear light found at 45° upwards, grazing the white-tented design.
walking through the corridor, a series of equidistant wooden planks were embedded with linear light strips at a random pattern. in the reception area, two “artichokes” by Louis Poulsen hang elegantly above the reception desk to either greet you with a hello or farewell.

LILY’S
architect: gatserelia design . type: restaurant . location: lebanon
a refined custom-made luminaire spreads its roots across the entire ceiling surface of Lily’s bakery, located in downtown Beirut. made up of 74 brass rods that interlink several shapes emitting light, the fixture emanates the ideal amount of light relative to the volume and function of the space.
following Gregory Gatserelia Design desire to architecturally center the space around a square based column - camouflaged in mirrors from all four sides, the beams of brass begin from the center and spread out onto every corner of the room, creating homogenous and diffused lighting. the fixture is composed of 8 different sizes of diamond shapes accompanied with a single size of cylinders housing adjustable or fixed spotlights.
above the bar area are spotlights meant to highlight displayed goods. these specific lights have special filters that allow warmer light emission on the bar top, alluding to the natural color of fresh warm bread, bringing out their vivid colors. vertical and horizontal linear LED strips are integrated into shelves to light the coffee bar, resulting in an esthetic feel and in functionality.
for optimal comfort, several light scenes are depicted in respect to time and function. different moods are set throughout the day. whether you’re seeking a quiet afternoon coffee or a cozy evening for affairs of the heart, the dimmable luminaire will accompany your heartfelt emotions at any time of day.

COCTEAU
COCTEAU
architect: gatserelia design . type: restaurant . location: lebanon
cocteau is an upscale restaurant with a, particularly lavish interior. the lighting was designed so it compliments Gregory Gatserelia Design’s concept; integrating the correct color temperature along with the correct power output drew upon the architecture of the design. to add flow to the differently heightened wooden cladding, LED strips were integrated within to give warmth to the vast interior, creating an intended sense of synergy.
jean Cocteau›s works are distributed onto a bookshelf inspired luminaire which is lit using invisible LED strips. this falls perfectly within the modernist interior of the restaurant. to provide an ambient light, ceiling mounted rectangular boxes are lit with fluorescent lamps. however, to accentuate the lighting of the dining area, directional spotlights are installed.
the lighting scheme is designed and installed so as to provide each area with the intensity of lighting needed, intentionally allowing some spaces to remain in relative darkness.

AL SULTAN BRAHIM
architect: gatserelia design . type: restaurant . location: dubai
al sultan brahim is a lebanese seafood restaurant with a widely pleasant, profoundly timeless and highly comfortable design - a concept by Gregory Gatserelia Design.
the lighting is a mix between suspended lighting and recessed spotlights and LEDs, integrated into the curved back wall and ceiling. the main lighting attraction is the chandeliers, custom made with overlapping brass plates with a bronze finish with integrated led lighting. suspended within the space, they break up the height of the room and increase the sense of intimacy. neutral white led strips concealed on the lower part of the chandeliers were chosen to complement daylight. the shadow effect these suspensions have on the ceiling and walls is both dramatic and atmospheric.
the exterior visual barrier of fish flying in space, besides being visually appealing, works through an effect of light on the polished stainless steel (sun during the day and spotlights during the night) as a visual barrier between the restaurant and the surrounding spaces.

LA CENTRALE
architect: maria group . type: restaurant . location: lebanon
the central is a renovation project revolving around the place’s existing iconic space, which is to be represented via its architectural qualities. the new intervention is thus identified as a temporal marker.
a floating platform embraces visitors through the warm LED lighting, leaving them surrounded by the “centrale” which is actually to their right, and virtually reflected on their left. the main items that allow the creation of such an ambience are paintings symmetrically hung on the wall. these project the main table from across, which is highlighted using custom made suspension with accent lighting. the paintings are printed on translucent plexiglas allowing the lighting twist: a carefully outlined black and white background emphasized via LED lights, adding life to the on-wall reflection by redrawing the photos with lights.
to produce different scenes and break the verticality of the space, adjustable floor lamps act as horizontal lighting elements. this technique puts into play indirect lighting, diffused lighting, and accent lighting, all running on different circuits. the finest detail of the stairs’ landing is finally worked using a custom tube assuring direct lighting of the corner.

public restaurant and hooka lounge is a large and spacious area that needs sufficient lighting allowing a comfortable ambience. in order to highlight the different textures of public and accentuate the lighting of each area as needed, a combination of accent light and indirect light is put to play.
the tables are accentuated via halogen lamps, each projecting its light on its respective unit. to meet the multifunctional aspect of the place, suspended fixtures in grey painted metal hang and diffuse indirect lighting, creating an ambient mood. such a method offers an industrial and useful theme, while providing all the lighting needed.
as for the terrace, the lighting and architecture collaborate: projectors are discretely positioned illuminating the area, all the while preserving the design intended by the architects.

the whole project is mainly defined by two “sliding” concentric arcs setting out a clear radial geometry converging to a center point located in the sea, hence allowing unblocked sea view to all the guest rooms and facilities. the building skin reflects an abstraction the famous jordanian stone carvings through its consistent use of the yellow stone surfaces, punctured with different opening shapes and sizes. those openings are directly facing the great vistas: the silhouette of red mountains on the east and the calm sea on the west. landscaping provides natural shading to the project. wooden louvres, pergolas and terraces minimize the impact of the heat and sun.
horizontal openings on the eastern façade regulate panoramic views of the granitic mountain silhouette. by night, it is the city that is offered a spectacle of light and shadows, as silhouettes move along the brightly lit horizontal windows of the hotel. it is almost a gesture of thanks towards the city, for allowing it to hug all the sea views.

THE WIND PORTAL
the wind portal
interior designer: najla el zein studio . type: installation . location: victoria & albert museum, london
the project is a walk through installation of an 8m high gate composed of 5000 handcrafted paper wind mills aligned on pipes.
these pipes had small holes, skillfully positioned next to each windmill to allow it to rotate. through this installation, the designer wanted to represent the earths most versatile element, wind.
the heart of the installation was a complex integrated computer program that controlled the wind, sound (a bypass of the wind) and light.
the air was sequentially controlled through solenoid valves on the pipes in a random manner. Thus, causing ripples of movement across the installation. the lighting was positioned above the installation and programmed to cyclically dim and brighten.
the lighting on the outside rows had narrow beam angles and in the inside had wider beam angles, thus casting shadows when lit. this reinforced the architects’ concept as the light appeared to play with the wind flow and gave us the impression of a breathing piece.
the motion of the windmills was promoted or demoted by the lights that are casted on them, which is the natural tendency of things in the forest.

SARDINE SCHOOL
the wind portal
lighting designer: maurice asso . type: installation . location: PAD paris, paris
the sardine school was originally showcased at ‘PAD Paris 2014’ with smo gallery. it casts fish like shadows and the movement of light projected on the barrel itself creates a wave like effect. Made from 227 cans of sardines plated in different tones of copper. Integrated led chips project light against an acid oxidized copper barrel. the dynamic led controller animate a wave like effect that travel through the row of sardine cans.
